Introduction
Course Purpose
Someone, somewhere has to be responsible for listing or interpreting requirements and determining minimum acceptable levels for life safety and property protection applied to buildings and operations. The fire safety industry refers to this person or party as the authority having jurisdiction, or "AHJ." Authorities having jurisdiction come in many forms, such as these fire department inspection officials.
The definition of the authority having jurisdictionThe organization, office, or individual responsible for approving equipment, materials, an installation, or a procedure. , as listed in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards, is universally adopted. There may be more than one AHJ on a project depending on the project scope or the occupancy.
