NFPA 101, Life Safety Code

Fire sprinkler systems were primarily considered to be property conservation tools, especially early on. Now, however, they are coming to be seen as life safety tools.

As life safety tools, fire sprinkler systems are applied in the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) differently depending upon the occupancyThe Life Safety Code is occupancy-based, but only the general requirements for fire sprinkler systems are contained in the specific occupancy chapter. From the specific occupancy chapter, the Life Safety Code will direct one to a more specific application chapter that details the requirements of the fire sprinkler system installation, if any exist. . For example, the requirements for a fire sprinkler system in a facility with a hazardous operation are much more stringent than the requirements in an office building because the fire load is less in the office building. This means that in an office building, it is conceivable that the people may not be impacted to the same level they would be in a hazardous industrial occupancy, simply because the fuel load is substantially less.
