Automatic Sprinkler Inspection, Testing & Maintenance

Alarm and riser check valves

The mechanical water flow alarm (water motor gong) on a wet-pipe sprinkler system must be tested quarterly.

An electronic switch that transmits a signal to a protective signaling system, such as a pressure switch or vane-type water flow switch, is tested semi-annually.

Water motor gong and waterflow switch testing is conducted by opening and flowing the test connection until the water flow signal is transmitted in the same manner it would during a fire.

In this photo, the water motor gong is visible.  But note the black pressure switch, on top of the retard chamber.  This is part of the standard trim package, and may be used to transmit a primary signal, or be connected to a local electric bell.
