How Hydraulics Work...

As you are aware, when water passes through a conduit, it loses energyThe energy loss is measured as friction loss. You can think of it as the price of doing business...if I want to move furniture from point A to point B, there will always be some cost involved - energy expended. Its the same with water..  The loss of energy results in a lower pressure at the other end of the pipe, which results in a lesser flow, as long as the source of volume and pressure is not adjusted or changed.  The purpose of hydraulically calculating a sprinkler system is to make sure that the sizing of the piping is controlledThis may not be the best word to describe it, but larger piping costs more in both its price, and the cost to install it. If the water supply is known, pipe sizes can be adjusted to use the water supply to its fullest extent by controlling the friction losses in the pipe - and size is an important factor in controlling pressure., so that the most efficient use of the water supply - flow and pressure - is guaranteed. 

To suppress or control a fire, water has to be applied in quantities that will have the ability to absorb the heat of combustion of the materials burning.  If there isn't enough volume of water to do this, then all of the piping schemes in the world will not help.  But, with a sufficient water supply and a well-devised delivery systemPipes and nozzles..., the heat released can be absorbed through the application of the water.

Hydraulic calculations, like any other liquid flow calculation, take into account the four basic items that control losses in piping systems.
