Hydraulic Calculations

Room Design Method

An Example

The hose connection duration is found in a table in NFPA 13.  It applies the time that the water supply must be able to supply the full flow for hose streams for the three (3) different occupancy hazards.

So, the walls in the building must have a fire resistance rating equal to or greater than the duration listed in the table below, taken from NFPA 13.  This reflects the values to be applied to construction:
light hazard occupancy                    30 minutes ordinary hazard                               60 to 90 minutes extra hazard                                    90 to 120 minutes The larger time value applies to those facilities that do not have a fire alarm system connected to a constantly attended location.  If a building has a fire alarm system that transmits signals to a community dispatch center, for example, the lower value applies.

For example, in an apartment buildingThis is quite typical for an apartment building - the exit paths (corridors) must have a higher fire resistance rating than the walls within the living units., the corridor walls have a fire resistance rating of one (1) hour, and the interior walls within the units have a fire resistance rating of 30-minutes.  As an apartment building is a light hazard occupancy, the room design method could be applied, as the duration for the hose streams is 30 minutes, and this matches the fire resistance rating within the units.  Thus, the room design method can be applied throughout all of the units, as long as they are all constructed in this manner.
