Introduction to Clean Agents

Commonly Used Clean Agents

HFC-227ea (FM-200, FE-227)

HFC-227ea, 1,1,1,2,3,3,3 heptafluoropropane, is produced under the trade names of FM-200® and FE-227® by E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. It is classified as a halocarbon clean agent and is employed at design concentrations typically ranging from 6.2% to 9.0% by volume. This concentration range corresponds to an agent mass requirement of 3.0 to 4.5 lb/100 ft3 of protected volume (48 to 71.8 kg/100m3 of protected volume). This mass requirement is approximately double that is required by Halon 1301, but is approximately 30 % less than that required by carbon dioxide. It's stored as a liquid in the discharge cylinder and is super-pressurized to either 360 psig (24.8 bar) or 600 psig (42 bar) with nitrogen.  Under these conditions HFC-227ea has a maximum cylinder fill density of 72 lb/ft3 (1153 kg/m3), which corresponds to an agent storage volume requirement of 0.042 to 0.062 ft3/100 ft3 of protected space (41.6 to 62.2 L/100 m3 of protected space).

It is nontoxic, odorless and colorless and is not suspected of contributing to stratospheric ozone depletionThe molecule does not contain any bromine or chlorine atoms, which are suspected of causing stratospheric ozone depletion..
HFC-227ea does have a non-zero global warming potential (GWP) with an estimated atmospheric lifetime of 34.2 years and a GWP of 3220 (GWP of CO2=1). Source: United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Exposure to HFC-227ea can cause cardiac sensitization, similarly to Halon 1301. The highest tested concentration at which there was no observable adverse effect (NOAEL) was 9% by volume. The lowest tested concentration at which there was an observable adverse effect (LOAEL) was 10.5% by volume.
