Introduction to Clean Agents

Commonly Used Clean Agents

IG-541 (Inergen)

IG-541 is a blend of 50% nitrogen, 42% argon and 8% carbon dioxide and is produced under the trade name of Inergen® by Ansul, Inc. It is classified as an inert gaseous clean agent and is employed at design concentrations typically ranging from 34.7% to 42% by volume. This concentration range corresponds to an agent volume requirement of 42.6 to 54.5 ft3/100 ft3 of protected volume (42.6 to 54.5 m3/100 m3 of protected volume). It is stored as a compressed gas in the discharge cylinder with a pressure of 2175 psig (150 bar). Under these conditions, IG-541 has a cylinder fill of 157 ft3 of agent delivered/ft3 of cylinder (157 m3 of agent delivered/m3 of cylinder), which corresponds to an agent storage volume requirement of 0.271 to 0.347 ft3/100 ft3 of protected space (271 to 347 L/100 m3 of protected space). IG-541 is also available in cylinders pressurized to 2900 psig (200 bar) which corresponds to a reduced storage volume requirement of 0.207 to 0.264 ft3/100 ft3 of protected space (207 to 264 L/100 m3 of protected space).

It is nontoxic, odorless and colorless, and is not suspected of contributing to stratospheric ozone depletion or directly to global warming (GWP of 0.08 due to carbon dioxide content).
IG-541, like other inert gaseous clean agents, can be a simple asphyxiant at high concentrations with physiological effects being based on the reduced oxygen concentration in the protected enclosure. In NFPA 2001, oxygen concentrations are treated as the functional equivalents of the NOAEL (no observable adverse effect) and LOAEL (lowest observable adverse effect) levels. Oxygen concentrations for asphyxiation are: 12% NOAEL and 10% LOAEL. The corresponding agent concentrations are 43% NOAEL and 52% LOAEL.
