Commonly Used Clean Agents

IG-100 (Nitrogen)

IG-100 is pure nitrogen.  It is classified as an inert gaseous clean agent and is employed at design concentrations typically ranging from 40.3 % to 43.7 % by volume. This concentration range corresponds to an agent volume requirement of 51.6 to 57.4 ft3/100 ft3 of protected volume (51.6 to 57.4 m3/100 m3 of protected volume). It is stored as a compressed gas in the discharge cylinder with a pressure of 2900 psig (200 bar). Under these conditions IG-100 has a maximum cylinder fill of 193 ft3 of agent delivered/ft3 of cylinder (193 m3 of agent delivered/m3 of cylinder), which corresponds to an agent storage volume requirement of 0.267 to 0.298 ft3/100 ft3 of protected space (267 to 298 L/100 m3 of protected space). 
It is nontoxic, odorless and colorless and is not suspected of contributing to stratospheric ozone depletion or directly to global warming.

IG-100, like other inert gaseous clean agents, can be a simple asphyxiant at high concentrations with physiological effects being based on the reduced oxygen concentration in the protected enclosure. In NFPA 2001, oxygen concentrations are treated as the functional equivalents of the NOAEL (no observable adverse effect) and LOAEL (lowest observable adverse effect) levels. Oxygen concentrations for asphyxiation are: 12% NOAEL and 10% LOAEL. The corresponding agent concentrations are 43% NOAEL and 52% LOAEL.
