Requirements for neon signs are also addressed in this article under Part II of Article 600, which addresses numerous issues with regard to neon tubing installations.

Some of these signs are built and packaged and perhaps even listed as units, but others require assembly or are custom made and installed in the field. Field-installed skeleton tubing is not required to be listed, but must be installed in compliance with Article 600.

The wiring of neon signs has been known to start fires, so the concern here is primarily the high voltage and preventing any corona discharge, an electric discharge that may be created because of that high voltage.
