Power Sources

Section 695.3

Section 695.3 addresses power sources for electric motor-driven fire pumps. These requirements are based on the concept that a power source must be extremely reliable, because it will be used when pumped water is needed to extinguish a fire. It's up to the authority having jurisdiction to decide what constitutes a reliable source.

Section 695.3 provides the choice of either a single individual source or multiple sources. The more common choice is to have a utility sourceUtility SourceThe utility source would usually not be considered adequately reliable, because there's a possibly the utility source might be lost for a period, perhaps even as a result of the same event that causes a fire. A secondary source would typically be some kind of on-site standby source, such as a generator or fuel cell. that is supplemented by another source.
