Article 695, Fire Pumps

Continuity of Power

Section 695.4

Section 695.4 requires that there be as little chance of disconnection of power as possible.

Section 695.4(A) gives the general requirement that the power source should be directly connected to the fire pump controller. In general, there would need to be a power source, conductors, a controller and controller disconnecting means and then the pump. Because the fire pump should be allowed to run to failure, an overcurrent device would operate only if the motor goes into a short-circuit condition but should not respond to an overload condition. Section 695.4(B) limits the number of elements that could interrupt the power supply, such as disconnects and overcurrent devices, and provides special requirements where they are necessary. Section 695.5 gives special rules for transformers that supply fire pumps.
Sections 695.3(C), 695.4(B)(1)(b) and 695.5(C) provide special requirements for a large facility where multiple buildings are served by a single service, and therefore each building is supplied by a feeder, rather than by its own service.  These situations will require some of the additional disconnects addressed by 645.4.
