Introduction to the NEC

Units of Measurement

Hard & Soft Conversions

Required measurements are generally stated in both SI units and English units. If conversion is necessary, Section 90.9 offers two methods:

A hard conversion offers two numbers that are not precisely equal but are close enough for the purposes of that particular rule. A hard conversion is frequently used and generally required. For example, Section 110.26 gives the minimum workspace height as 2 meters, or 6.5 feet. A soft conversion may be used when greater accuracy is needed, perhaps because of safety concerns or because a standard trade size is used. In this case, the code will offer two measures that are precisely equal, with the only difference being due to rounding in the unit. For example, Section 404.8 gives the maximum height of a switch (the grip of the switch when it is held at its highest position) as 2 meters, or 6 ft. 7 in.
