General Requirements in the NEC

Mechanical Execution of Work

Integrity of Electrical Equipment

Section 110.12(B)

Section 110.12(B) addresses the integrity of electrical equipment and connections, requiring, for example, that panelboards and other electrical parts be protected from the work of other trades.

This section addresses contamination that would interfere with the electrical function of the equipment, but it does not address insignificant levels of  contamination.

For example, the bus bars of a panelboard must not be painted or contaminated with various kinds of finish materials that are used in the building construction, but there is no requirement to avoid getting small paint spatters on wire insulation.

It does not specify how protection is to be provided.
