General Requirements in the NEC

Spaces for Equipment

Energized Equipment - Voltage

The depth required for working space for energized equipment is based on the voltage to ground.

If the voltage to ground is 0-150 volts, then all three conditions produce the same depth requirement, which is 3 feet. If the voltage is between 150 and 600 volts to ground, then the dimension is greater for condition two (3 ft, 6 in)  and condition three (4 ft). Section 110.26 and Table 110.26(A)(1) cover 600 volts or less. If the voltage is higher than 600 volts, increasing depths for higher voltages are provided by Table 110.34(A). This table also uses conditions 1, 2 and 3 and provides for voltages up to and above 75,000 volts.
