Section 110.26(D) requires that the working spaces must be illuminated, so work can be done safely and the person working in that space can see what they're doing.

Mandatory illumination is not required to be dedicated to just the working space, so general illumination for the area can be used, but control of the lighting may not be exclusively automatic. The NEC does not specify a level of illumination, but other standards can provide recommendations.
