Emergency voice/alarm communications (EVAC) systems

Any system that uses the sound of a human voice to notify occupants of a fire signal is an emergency voice/alarm communications system. These systems can be designed in a couple of different ways. First, the voice message can simply be used to evacuate an entire building. A tone alert will be issued, followed by specific instructions to exit. Many times, however, the voice system is used to convey specific instructions to different parts of a building. For example, if a fire were to occur on the fourth floor of a ten story building, the system could be programmed to notify the occupants of the third, fourth, and fifth floors to evacuate, while directing people on other floors to remain pending further instructions. Or, the voice message could direct people on affected floors to proceed to areas of refuge on another floor.
