Classification Basics

What Is A Classified Area?

What Classified Areas Are

Classified areas are locations where fire or explosion hazards may exist due to flammable gases or vapors, flammable liquids, combustible dust, or ignitable fibers or flyings. Although fire and explosion hazards are not completely separate issues, in this context explosion hazards are mostly associated with gases, vapors and dusts, and fire hazards are associated with fibers and flyings. The precise classification of an area depends on the properties properties
The properties of a material are described generally by the Class assigned to an area. Class I includes gases and vapors, Class II includes dusts, and Class III includes fibers/flyings. In addition, gases, vapors, and dusts are assigned to Groups based on explosion characteristics of the materials. of the specific flammableflammable, combustible, or ignitable materials:
Generally, flammable materials are those that are easily set on fire and will burn quickly or readily. Combustible means capable of taking fire or easily burned up. Ignitable refers to materials that can be set on fire. Although these terms are very similar and are sometimes used interchangeably, in this case flammable is used to describe liquids, gases, and vapors, combustible is used to describe liquids or dusts, and ignitable is used with fibers and flyings. Any of these can form an "ignitable mixture" with air. and the likelihood likelihood
The likelihood that a fire or explosion hazard will exist is described by the Division or Zone of the area. Generally, if the hazard is only a remote possibility or would occur only with a catastrophic failure, the area will be unclassified. that the materials will be present. A single area may have more than one classification. For example, many areas where coal is handled include both flammable gases and combustible dusts.
