Classification Basics

Classification Terminology

Classification by Zones

Zone classification provides an alternative to classification by division in Class I areas. This classification scheme also provides some types of equipment and ways of reducing the risk of ignition that are not recognized under the division classification method.

Generally a Class I area may be classified by Division or Zone, but not both, although reclassification is permitted. Both classification systems may be used on a single project or site, but only for separate sources of gas or vapor, and an area classified under one system may not overlap an area classified under the other system. Like the Division classification system, Zones are used to estimate the degree of risk or the likelihood that an ignitable mixture will be present.
