Classification Basics

Classification Terminology

Zone 0

Zone 0 areas are those where an ignitable mixture of gas or vapor is present continuously or for long periods of time. This is essentially a subset of a Division 1 area. Because the hazardous condition is normally (perhaps always) present, the equipment and wiring methods that may be used in Zone 0 areas are severely restricted severely restricted.
Generally, no electrical wiring should be located in Zone 0 areas, but where wiring is needed, only intrinsically safe wiring is permitted. Because of the energy limitations of intrinsically safe circuits, only some instrumentation and signaling circuits may be used..

The area above the liquid line inside this tank is a Zone 0 area.
