Area Classification

Role of the NEC

The NEC has three primary functions with regard to classified areas.

The NEC provides definitions definitions
Definitions of areas are given in Article 500 for Division classified areas and in Article 505 for Zone classified areas. of the classified areas.

Generally, the NEC does not say how to classify areas or how to determine the extent of classified areas except for certain very common applications that have been described in other documents from which the area classification information has been extracted and included in the NEC.
