In addition to the documents from which information has been extracted for the common occupancies, the NEC includes references to many other documents that include information on area classification. Some of these include recommendations for specific dimensions of areas and some describe methods for use in determining the classification and extent of hazardous locations.

Most of the documents referenced in the NEC are included in Section 500.4(B), FPN No. 1 and FPN No. 2 but many other documents are also available for specific applications. Two of the referenced documents, NFPA 497 and NFPA 499 are recommended practices for the classification of Class I and Class II areas generally. These documents include step-by-step approaches to classifying areas. The NEC also provides references to standards that address other electrical hazards that are not covered by the NEC, specifically static electricity and lightningstatic electricity and lightning:
