Protection Methods

General

The protection techniques that are permitted in zone-classified areas are given in Section 505.8. Nine methods are listedNine methods are listed:
Unlike division classification methods, "other protection techniques" are not included in the list. Only those methods mentioned are permitted. Explosionproof equipment is an example of a technique for division classifications that is not included in the zone protection techniques. However, 505.20(B), Exception No. 1 permits equipment listed for Class I, Division 1 to be used in Class I, Zone 1 areas. A similar exception applies to the use of Class I, Division 2 equipment in Class I, Zone 2 areas.. Equipment must be identified and marked. Section 505.9 covers the methods of determining suitability. Equipment that is marked for Division use must have additional markings to be used in Zone areas.
