Protection Methods

Type of Protection "n"

Type of protection "n" is defined as a type of protection where electrical equipment, in normal operation, is not capable of igniting a surrounding explosive gas atmosphere and a fault capable of causing ignition is not likely to occur.

This method is unique (by name) to zone-classified areas, but the mechanisms are equivalent to the nonincendive type of protection used in Class I, Division 2 areas. Type "nR" (Restricted breathing) is often used for lighting as shown in the illustration here. Restricted breathing allows only very small amounts of gas or vapor to enter the enclosure, and the gas or vapor is unlikely to be present in a Zone 2 area. Other "n" protection methods are not often used for Zone 2 areas because Zone 1 equipment is easily obtained and not significantly more expensive.

This protection technique shall be permitted for equipment in Class I, Zone 2 locations only.
