Supervisory Initiating Devices

Sprinkler Supervision

Building Temperature

Water freezes at 32°F. All sprinkler system, regardless of the type, have water in the piping up to the sprinkler valve. This means that the sprinkler riser must be located in an area that is heated. To prevent freezing of sprinkler piping, low building temperature sensors are installed in the areas most prone to freezing. These sensors are designed to initiate a supervisory signal if the temperature drops to 40°F or below. Someone can then respond to the area to take action to keep the piping from freezing.
