Supervisory Initiating Devices

Overview

Definition

A supervisory initiating device is an initiating device that initiates a supervisory signal to the fire alarm system. A supervisory signal indicates an "off normal" condition, or the restoration to normal of a monitored fire protection or life safety system life safety system
A life safety system is any system which contributes to the fire safety of the building occupants during a fire. This includes smoke exhaust, stairwell pressurization, elevator recall, and other building operations that are designed to protect the building occupants from the effects of a fire., or the need for action in connection with guard tours, fire suppression systems or equipment, or maintenance features of related systems.

The term "supervision" has been replaced in The National Fire Alarm Code by the term "monitoring for integrity".  Thus, the term monitoring is synonomous with supervising.  In essence, supervisory initiating devices create signals that transmit to the fire alarm control unit to simply "monitor" a condition. An example If someone turns the valve handle two turns or more, the switch is activated and sends a signal to the fire alarm control unit indicating the valve position is no longer "normal".of this would be the switch on a sprinkler system control valve.
