Supervisory Initiating Devices

Overview

Applications

A properly designed, installed, and maintained fire alarm system can do much more for a facility than simply detecting fires and sounding an alarm. The fire alarm system can actually be used as a tool by facility management. It can be used to watch over the function of other fire protection and life safety systems in the facility. This "oversight" function is accomplished through the use of supervisory initiating devices.

The National Fire Alarm Code permits supervision of any function in the facility, such as monitoring a programmable controller, by the fire alarm system as long as it does not interfere with the operations of the fire alarm system. This includes security, process control and other critical functions.
