Supervisory Initiating Devices

Valve Supervision

General Information

Switches to supervise the position of automatic sprinkler and fire protection water supply control valves are probably the most common type of supervisory initiating device.

Many codes and standards codes and standards
NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, requires that steps be taken to assure sprinkler control valves remain open. One of the allowable methods is to provide electronic supervision by the fire alarm systems., and some authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ), require electronic supervision of important valves in fire suppression systems. Supervision is to assure, to the greatest extent possible, that the systems are in-service at the time of a fire. Any unauthorized closure of a supervised valve initiates a supervisory signal. Someone can then be dispatched to the valve to find out why it is closed, and open it if it should not be closed.
