Special Occupancies

Special Requirements for Other Occupancies

Places of Assembly

Article 518: Assembly Occupancies

Article 518 addresses areas of assembly where 100 or more people may gather in one location.

Section 518.2 lists some examples, including:

assembly halls, auditoriums, museums, gymnasiums and
mortuary halls

It is important to keep in mind that these requirements are not limited to places included in the list of examples, and some occupancies in the list in some cases may not be large enough for 100 people. Special rules are needed because of the increased hazard to people in case of a fire due to the large number of people who might have to be evacuated from the space. Extra precautions are also needed to make certain that the electrical system will not start or contribute to a fire. Article 518 limits the choices of wiring methods, especially in fire-rated construction.
