Special Requirements for Other Occupancies

Floating Buildings, Marinas and Boatyards

Article 553 & Article 555

Article 553 addresses floating buildings and the specific hazards related to the building being on the water but connected to electrical service from the shore.

Article 555 covers the fixed equipment and electrical equipment that will be in and around marinas and boat yards, but it does not cover the boats.

Because these areas are wet, there is significant concern about shock hazard. There is also specific concern about where the water will be and making certain that the electrical system is shielded or protected from that water influence. Section 555.2  defines the electrical datum plane and requires most electrical equipment to be installed at some distance above that level.
