Special Requirements for Other Occupancies

Temporary Installations

Article 590: Temporary Installations

Article 590 covers temporary installations in any type of occupancy, including construction or temporary displays. These uses are also addressed to some extent in sections of other articles (for example, places of assembly, such as exhibit halls, and other occupancies) where portable and movable equipment is likely to be used from time to time.

Issues of particular significance in Article 590 are the special requirements for ground-fault circuit interrupters (sometimes in places where they would not be required otherwise) and the somewhat relaxed rules about what can be used for temporary wiring methods.

The scope of Article 590 is given in Section 590.1: "temporary electric power and wiring installations." Section 590.2 also says that that all the ordinary requirements of the code apply, except as modified in Article 590. A significant modification is the permission in Section 590.4 to use flexible cords and to attach those cords to structures, or in certain cases to vegetation, something that would normally be prohibited by Section 400.8.
