Special Occupancies

Hazardous Occupancies

Presence of Electrical Equipment

Hazardous occupancies are covered in much more detail in another online course. For the purposes of this module and this course, it is important to recognize what the NEC covers, where in the Code to find this information and what information must be found elsewhere.

Classification is not very meaningful unless there is some electrical equipment in the area, but the classifications are based on conditions in the area that may exist independently of the electrical system.

These classifications are used by electrical designers and installers to keep the electrical system from becoming an ignition source for a particular environment. Where other ignition sources are normally present, classification of the area based on electrical ignition sources may be unnecessary.
