Conductor Selection & Application

The Table Method

Proper Use of the Tables

According to Section 310.15(B), Informational Note, proper use of the tables is based on the assumption that the load calculation will be based on Article 220. The load calculation will consider a number of issues, including the known history of that particular type of load and primary factors that have already been mentioned.

It is important to note that Article 220 may have a tendency to build in a bit of a safety factor by assuming a slightly larger load than might actually be present.

Informational Note: Table 310.15(B)(16) through Table 310.15(B)(19) are application tables for use in determining conductor sizes on loads calculated in accordance with Article 220. Allowable ampacities result from consideration of one or more of the following:

Temperature compatibility with connected equipment, especially the connection points. Coordination with circuit and system overcurrent protection. Compliance with the requirements of product listings or certifications. See 110.3(B). Preservation of the safety benefits of established industry practices and standardized procedures.
