Introduction

General Conductor Requirements

In sizing and selecting a conductor multiple factors must be considered. Probably the three most significant factors are that the conductor must be sized:

to carry the intended load without overheating the conductor, to avoid overheating of the connected equipment and to assure proper overcurrent device operation.

Another factor in the selection of a conductor is the type of insulation, which will be based at least partly on where the conductor will be located.

Important Note: The material in this module relies heavily on the tables in the Code. While it is recommended that the Code be available at all times while engaged in this training, it is especially important in this module, particularly in the section covering the Table Method of determining allowable ampacity.
