Definitions

It is important to understand the definitions as they are listed in the NEC, as they may be different than those that are traditionally used.

For example, a plenum is traditionally a space above a suspended ceiling that may be used as an air handling system return. There would be no specific structure, simply the open space above the ceiling.

However, in the NEC, a plenum is a constructed object: "A compartment or chamber to which one or more air ducts are connected and that forms part of the air distribution system."
