Fire Alarm System Fundamentals

Primary Power Supply Requirements

Primary power has to be connected to a dedicated branch circuit, which means that there can be no other load on the branch circuit. The circuit has to be protected from damage and be provided with overcurrent protection In older systems, a fused switch would be provided for this service; modern installations will normally use a properly sized circuit breaker..
These requirements apply also to any remotely located power supplies that provide power to the fire alarm system. Typically, a larger system will need distributed notification appliance circuit “boosters”This piece of equipment takes on many names, such as a "NAC panel" or "NAC power supply." The term "booster" comes from its function: the power supply "boosts" the power to the notification appliance circuit. In many systems, the main fire alarm control unit can't provide enough power to operate all of the notification appliances in the system. in the field to satisfy power supply requirements. These control the output to the notification appliances on the circuits. They are also considered power, so they are considered control panels.
The location of any remotely located power supplies must be indicated at the main fire alarm control panel. If so desired, and if the control unit is capable, the control unit display can be programmed and used for this purpose.

All of the notification circuit power supplies, also known as panels of NAC power supplies, were located adjacent to the fire alarm control panel in this installation. Each individual circuit power supply has its own primary and secondary.
