Fire Alarm System Fundamentals

Secondary Power Supplies

As mentioned, secondary power has to be provided for fire alarm systems and must be of sufficient capacity. Secondary power is typically provided by batteries but can be provided by a generator. If multiple generators are used for secondary power connections, the first must be automatic starting, but subsequent generators can be manually started, as long as a key-start isn’t used.

The capacity of the batteries is based on the size of the fire alarm system. Batteries have to be sized to supply the fire alarm system power for a period of 24 hours in non-alarm condition, and five minutes in full alarm. Thus, the larger the fire alarm system, the larger the capacity of the batteries.
