Load Calculations

Branch Circuit Load Calculations

Section 220.12

Section 220.12

Section 220.12 deals with loads that are calculated based on building area. It also tells how to calculate that area using the outside dimensions of the buildings.

Table 220.12 (click to open)

Section 220.12 refers to Table 220.12, which includes square foot load allowances for general lighting in some very common occupancies.

For example, a dwelling unit is calculated at 3 VA per square foot, or 33 VA per square meter. The 3 VA per square foot number for dwelling units is accompanied by a note that says to see Section 220.14(J), which in turn says that the general use receptacles in a dwelling unit – not the ones used for specific circuits like specific appliances or small-appliance circuits or for laundry loads that are assigned ratings in Article 210 and load values in Part III – are included in general lighting loads. So no additional calculation is required for general-use receptacles on branch circuits in dwelling units, because they are included in lighting loads.
