Article 220: Load Calculations

Article 220 is the basis for all load calculations. Load calculations are the basis for the sizing of all types of circuits in the National Electrical Code®, particularly circuits that supply some kind of power or lighting equipment.

An informational note in Section 310.15(B) states that the application tables used to determine ampacities are based on loads calculated according to Article 220. The requirements for sizing branch circuits, feeders and services all refer to Article 220 for the load calculation.

There are other methods of calculating loads, but if they are used then the tables in the NEC may not be applicable to those calculations.
