Load Calculations

Introduction

Branch Circuits

Minimum conductor ampacity and minimum overcurrent device ratings for branch circuits are covered in Sections 210.19 and 210.20.

Section 210.19

Section 210.19 says the minimum size conductor is based on the load and may be modified if the load is continuous. That modification does not affect the actual load, which remains the same, but it does require larger conductors for continuous loads.

Section 210.20

Section 210.20 is a similar rule that applies to overcurrent device ratings, saying that the overcurrent device size is based on the load but, like the conductor, is also sized based on whether the load is continuous, noncontinuous or a combination of continuous and noncontinuous.

Neither of these rules for sizing conductors and overcurrent devices change the actual load or the calculated load. The calculated load is not increased because the load is continuous.
