Identifying Materials & Equipment

Liquids, Vapors & Gases

Group A

Group A is defined as acetylene in the NEC The definition in the NEC is extracted from NFPA 497 which says "Acetylene or gases or vapors of equivalent hazard." However, no other Group A materials are included in the list of selected chemicals included in NFPA 497. Nevertheless, NFPA 497 leaves the door open for chemicals with similar hazards to be included in Group A. Acetylene would otherwise fit into Group B, but it has an extremely high explosion pressure.. Under the Zone classification system, acetylene is included in Group IIC Group IIC is about the same as Groups A and B, but not precisely the same..
