Introduction

Course Purpose

This course also covers the methods of identifying appropriate electrical equipment for a given classification area Areas are classified based on the materials present and the likelihood that the materials will be present. Generally, Class I areas involve liquids, gases, or vapors; Class II areas involve combustible dusts, and Class III areas involve ignitible fibers and flyings. The likelihood that a hazard will exist is described by the Division or Zone classification of the area. Many types of equipment are suitable only for certain Classes, Divisions, or Zones as well as being suitable only for certain materials. based on the flammable or combustible materials that are present. Since all fibers and flyings are grouped together and made subject to the same requirements, we will not discuss their ignitible properties in this course.
