Identifying Materials & Equipment

Summary

Identification of Materials and Equipment

Areas are classified due to the presence or possible presence of flammable gases or vapors, flammable liquids, combustible dust, or ignitable fibers or flyings. The nature of the explosion or fire hazard and the types of electrical equipment needed to reduce the hazard depend on the properties of the specific materials present. Some materials are more hazardous than others or may involve different hazards than others. Therefore, equipment must be selected for compatibility with the specific materials present, including the Class, Division or Zone, and Group. To ensure compatibility, equipment must be properly identified and marked.
