Identifying Materials & Equipment

Liquids, Vapors & Gases

Flammable Liquids

Refrigerated and nonrefrigerated propane tanks and truck loading Flammable liquids, or Class I liquids as they are also called, are subdivided into Class IA Class IA liquids are those having flash points below 73° F (22.8° C) and having boiling points below 100°F (37.8°C)., Class IB Class IB liquids are those having flash points below 73°F (22.8°C) and having boiling points at or above 100°F (37.8°C)., and Class IC Class IC liquids are those having flash points at or above 73°F (22.8°C) and below 100°F (37.8° C). based on their flash points and boiling points. The rules for hazardous location installations do not vary by Class of liquid, but the  characterisitics of a liquid may be considered in determining the extent of an area. Some materials exist normally only as gases. In order to more efficiently store and transport these materials they may be cooled Flammable liquids such as LNG (liquefied natural gas) that require very low temperatures (below -150°F) to stay in a liquid state are called cryogenic materials. Other materials may be stored at low temperatures but not cryogenic temperatures. Either type will vaporize rapidly at normal temperatures. or pressurized Materials such as LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) are commonly stored above their boiling point and kept in a liquid state by pressure. These materials vaporize rapidly when exposed to atmospheric pressures. to the point that they become liquid, and will act like flammable liquids or heavier than air gases when first exposed to normal temperatures or pressures.

ExamplesCommon examples of flammable liquids are ethanol, ethyl ether, gasoline, and turpentine. Common examples of gases that are stored, handled, or transported as liquids are butane and propane.
