Power Supplies and Transmission

Power supplies for central stations are similar to those required for a protected premises fire alarm system, and the requirements are contained in the Fundamentals chapter of NFPA 72.

Retransmission of signals from the central station to the fire department, or to the center that dispatches fire services, must be immediate"Immediately" is not defined as a required length of time in NFPA 72, but there is wording in the Annex that suggests the retransmission of a signal should take no longer than 90 seconds. Unfortunately, many times this is not the case. If immediate retransmission is not achieved, the central station is in violation of its listing.. There must be two independent meansTwo independent telephone sets – with independent lines connected at the central station and the same arrangement at the communications center that dispatches fire services – meets the intent of NFPA 72 requirements for independent means. In other words, two connections to the phone network will suffice. This wasn't always the case and is allowed now due to improvements in the public switched telephone network. to retransmit the alarm signal. However, the use of a universal number, such as 911This is not allowed because the 911 number may be applicable to a community or area that is different from the location of the central station. Thus, the 911 call may be going to the wrong place., is not allowed as the principle means of retransmission.

If the fire dispatch center is not equipped to acknowledge receipt of the signal  from the central station, the central station has to send the signal over both communications means. The central station must date and time stamp the retransmission of signals to the dispatch center.
