Central Station Fire Alarm Systems

The UL listing of the physical central station building is not covered in NFPA 72.  Underwriters Laboratories UL827 is the standard that requires certain construction types, fire protection features in the central station, physical security features and equipment standards.  The central station facility has to be developed per the requirements of the UL listing standard, and must be operated in a fashion that protects the listing.

NFPA 72 focuses on the service scope of the central station service. If a central station company can't meet the requirements of the listing, then regardless of the scope of services offered, it can't be a listed central station service company.  However, if a particular client does not want to buy a specific service offered by the central station service company, the central station service company is not violating its listing as a central station service.  It simply isn't providing some of the listed central station service to that client.  The central station company is still listed, and the facility still meets all of the requirements of a listed central station service company. However, the client's management chose not to buy full central station listed service.
