Central Station Fire Alarm Systems

Typically, the listed central station provides monitoring, signal retransmission and record keeping at the central station and subcontracts the installation, and possibly the runner service out.  Often, depending on the location of the customer's property, the testing and maintenance also may be subcontracted.

To see how this works, let's consider a large corporation, maybe a Fortune 500 company, with corporate offices on Long Island. There are many locations all over the United States and two locations in Canada. Corporate management wants listed central station service at all facilities, and they want the central station service company to be a Long Island-based company. This type of a requirement will certainly narrow the field of listed central station service companies to choose from.

Five listed central station companies are found on Long Island, but a first review of the companies reveals that three of them do not offer runner service. Thus, they operate a listed central station, but do not choose to provide complete, listed central station service. These three companies are taken out of consideration. The other two are interviewed and corporate management makes a selection.

The Long Island central station facility will keep all records, provide all monitoring services, and retransmit all signals as necessary. For all of the Long Island facilities in the corporation, the central station service company installs all of the new systems, provides all testing and maintenance, and provides runner service from the Long Island central station.

For the locations outside of Long Island, the central station company uses their own installation teams when they are close to a branch office of the central station company, but also have listed subcontractors install, and test and maintain the systems. The local installation contractor will also provide runner service to the locations where they are handling the testing and maintenance. This is perfectly acceptable, as long as all of the proper listings of the central station, all equipment, and the local alarm service company are obtained. One contract is issued to the client corporation by the listed central station service company, and the service to the corporation is seamless.
