Remote Station and Protected Premises Fire Alarm Systems

Remote Stations

Facilities

The requirements for facilities are very flexible.  There are no construction requirementsEven though it isn't required, the Annex of NFPA 72 recommends that the remote station be constructed of materials that have a fire resistance rating of at least one hour. This will also apply to that part of the building that may house the remote station. Also, the Annex recommends that the entire remote station should be protected by a fire alarm system. in NFPA 72, nor are there any requirements for the remote station to be equipped with a fire alarm system, or other fire protection.

When the remote station is in a fire department or similar government facility, the transmission of alarm signals is all that the remote station may allow. NFPA 72 was never very clear in intent regarding the transmission of trouble and supervisory signals.  Many people interpreted the code to allow the transmission of trouble and supervisory signals to go to another location.
