Remote Station and Protected Premises Fire Alarm Systems

In a small industrial park in Norwich, CT, for example, there are a number of facilities that are directly connected to the Norwich Fire Department.  Earlier, these facilities were connected using simple leased, monitored phone circuits, and the fire alarm panel contained a reversing relay to trigger transmission. However, the Norwich Fire Department only received fire alarm signals - no trouble or supervisory signals.

So, the installing contractor, usually the same company for all of the alarm systems in these buildings, contracted with a local "monitoring company" for the connection of trouble and supervisory signals.  As this company was local, another direct connection using telephone company circuits was made to the monitoring company.

This monitoring company could have been an answering service, or a constantly attended location, acceptable to the AHJ - in this case, the fire department.
