Module Learning Outcomes:  Identify various plan symbols used in fire alarm design; identify model building and fire codes applicable to fire alarm systems

Enabling Points: 

Identify specific plan symbols Explain common construction terms found on drawings and in specifications Define joists beams columns truss authority having jurisdiction Explain how obstructions impact the placement of fire detection devices. Explain the purpose of NFPA 170. Explain the purpose for model building codes. List three documents that can be used as building codes.

This module satisfies part of the requirements of work elements 33013 (Building Codes) as listed in the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Program Detail Manual, Level II General Work Elements for certification of fire alarm technicians.  (Eighth Edition, September, 2005)
