Fire Alarm Plans and Code Requirements

Plan Symbols

Fire Alarm - NFPA 170

Fire alarm plans should include the standard symbols listed and described in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 170. Use of these symbols provides consistency in fire alarm plan development.

NFPA 170 contains plan symbols for all fire protection plans, not only fire alarm systems. There are many non-fire alarm plan symbols in NFPA 170 that should be reviewed, as they will have a bearing on the understanding of the fire protection plans in general The list that is in this section contains not only fire protection system symbols, such as fire alarm and sprinkler system devices. It also contains other fire protection symbology that has been adopted by insurance company and fire officials over the years. Items such as wall construction and elevator openings have been important for insurance rating purposes, and fire department pre-planning..

Keep in mind that the symbols displayed in this program do not represent complete listings. For a complete description of fire protection symbols, a copy of NFPA 170 should be obtained and reviewed. For construction symbols, architectural guidelines are available.
